Ultimate Edition 2.8 Lite

by on Dec.07, 2010, under Linux, Themes, Ubuntu, Ultamatix, Ultimate Edition

As promised, have the latest and the last release in the 2.8 series of Ultimate Edition. I decided against releasing the Netbook edition; insufficient testers and no official way of testing locally.

Ultimate Edition 2.8 lite is dedicated to those with low system resources, it is also lightning fast on machines that have the resources. There are no bells and whistles here, no office, no compiz; just the pure essentials. Ultimate Edition 2.8 lite was built off Lubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat updated and upgraded, which is based on the LXDE environment. Many applications were ripped from the operating system before I even started to build. This is "lite" there will not be a 64 bit edition.

This is the first time a lite edition has been released from us, not that it has not been asked for by many for some time. I do have 2 other "specialty" releases coming, one I hope to have dropped in time for Christmas. This one may cause a ruckus in the Linux community. Please stay tuned for that one, no promises. Ultimate Edition 2.8 lite will fit on a CD. On to the details.

The following applications were removed prior to build:

  • abiword
  • ace-of-penguins
  • lxterminal
  • leafpad
  • aqualung
  • gnumeric
  • elementary-icon-theme
  • lubuntu-icon-theme
  • mplayer
  • chromium-browser
  • xpad
  • cheese
  • hardinfo
  • simple-scan
  • osmo

Replaced by with thought and reason:

  • Blue deck theme pack – Lightweight theme with scalable icons
  • Terminator – Lightweight and supports splitting, better then loading a second instance.
  • Gedit – Lightweight when considering the number of formats supported.
  • Vlc – All in one app, video and audio are covered.
  • Firefox – I know there are lighter browsers, however this one is hard to beat.
  • Ultamatix – in case you want to install additional software, flash etc.

You are welcome, wait until you see the next release. I look for it to piss at least one person off. The end user may not feel the same way however. I have said enough, I do not want to let the cat out of the bag yet 😉

Looks like another excellent release. Thanks, TheeMahn and the UE contributors. 🙂 I shall give this a go for my desktop (wireless is the “fish or cut bait” issue for me.) My laptop is set for me, for now (full-no changes).

Your from Ohio, right.? This is only a suggestion and if your girlfriend is up to it- I believe. If you are maybe looking to boost your true Christmas Spirit, consider a visit to Wilmington, Ohio (Not sure how close that is to you.) say on December 15th. I am hearing wonderful things about the people and town of Wilmington. If you can make it, definitely visit the Murphy Theater about 6:45-7:00pm on the 15th. Just food for thought. Kindest regards. 🙂

Hi! I’ve tried 2 other LXDE OS, UE Lite is the one that works, but it’s missing an audio mixer – to unmute the mic, it wont load the restricted extras – plugins for web browsers to play divx movies and I thought Chromium browser was taken off. I wish it has auto update and compatable with Ubuntu One. Anyways, Its a keeper for my slow ASUS eeepc 4gb HD, 1gd RAM.I like the BlueDeck theme.
Thanks – in advanced for fixing.

I like the “lite” version! I hope that my suggesting a competing version is ok? Recently I discovered “OZ Unity” as well. Not only is it a decent “lite” version, but also a comprehensive one as well!

    Thank you 🙂

That is no problem, I am all about open source. Better then that other O/S 😉 I have been up all night compiling a “comprehensive” survey if the majority desires to run a Unity based O/S, it will be so. Built by the people for the people. There will be a slew of options. I have it working for the most part minus SQL. Once I have it collecting data, I will work on the ajax side to generate graphs based on votes. Current heading:

Your IP is 64.24.36.119. It appears that you are currently running Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 (this can be inaccurate, but will be recorded). Only one vote is allowed by each user. According to our database this IP has not voted yet. I would like to thank you for taking the time to help me, help you to make a better operating system. Your username if you have registered here or on the forum is optional, however the weight in which decisions will be finalized will be based on a formula which allows registered users a higher percentage on the outcome.

    Hello from france,
I discovered linux several weeks ago and tried several light distro before ultimate lite. sound great for me. I like the software choice and ram usage is pretty good. I tried several light distro , including linux mint lxde, but i found it a little bit overloaded with too many menus. Your target with this edition is good for me : light and efficient
Hope there will be others release in the futur.
    Thank you

Thank you sir, it has been downloaded 11,372 thus far and exponentially climbing 6,568 times just today & 6hrs to go 😉 This is the first release I have seen continue to rise, usually one day spike and traffic begins to trickle off, must have done something right.
