Shall We play a Game?

by on Jan.07, 2017, under Ultimate Edition

Uploading as I type is Ultimate Edition 5.0 Gamers. This is not a pretty Operating System, it was developed for one reason and one reason only & that is to play games. Wayne Mcginnis & I have stripped the O/S to the bone. I have been writing packages to break the 4.3 GB barrier for gaming. I think you will be pleasantly surprised in the Quantity / Quality.

You will not find a spreadsheet writer in this O/S. I highly suggest you install the operating system as well as graphic drivers before playing around. Some games will work w/o graphic drivers, the heavy ones a pre-requisite. Some games will download up to an additional 5GB of data. I have warned you. I will not take the time to write a page for it. I may add a link on the gamers page, but that is as far as it goes.

I don’t typically have time to play games, that may change in the future. With a AMD RyZen CPU & Vega GPU on my Itinerary. Both free, I will sell AMD stock to get both for free. I paid 0 for the stock is how it is free. Let me try and queue you in. I convinced a co-worker to invest in AMD back when it was $6.97 a share November 21st I believe at $30,000 (4,043 shares). I did not ask for money. He offered me 2 days later $5,000 for the tip. I turned it down. I wanted stock. I have stock in AMD. I know where they are going. As a bonus to him I will tell him when to sell.

Anyway, we are here to game right?

I have lost 12 TB of data as of recent, please allow at least a hour or 2 to upload. I will never buy a Seagate drive again. 1Year warantee, 12 TB gone. 1 Year and 3 months later drive #1 gone, a month or 2 later #2 gone. Only $500 get me? Information is priceless. I have had 10 year warantee SSD’s fail on me. Redundancy is a huge factor. Clouds have quit on me. It is BS to charge a guy $250 for a 6TB drive and only warrant it for 1 year. Like clock work gone. You think I would be more so pissed over the SSD with the 10 year warantee, no it did not take any data I cared about. SSD’s are small today, tomorrow wont be. Both of those 6TB drives do not have the capacitance of what is coming solidly. ETA 11 Minutes on the upload. 4th time I have uploaded it this eve.

Just saying,

TheeMahn

    Thank You

Definitely going to try it out.

I feel your pain. Data loss is not ever good. About the only reliable backup then becomes whatever you can cram onto Dual Layer DVDR, but the problem is mainly that you cannot reliably backup large amoounts of data to optical media. All the good backup programs, do not have dummy write methods, and if they encounter bad media, the entire process is aborted. Much of it is because the designers of the software, put the index of your OS on the last backup media of the set. So unless you get to the end of the set, you cannot just retry with another media at the failed point, or go past anything. So your still at the mercy of doing backup to an external HDD that you store away, and seldom use to hope that the drive never gets dropped or bumped. There is no such thing as smart drive to lock out bad parts. Luckily I have only lost out to 2 TB data of which I managed to still salvage most off of it, before tossing into trash. Data recovery tools, but then where to put the data that you recover if you dont have the money to replace the failing drive to begin with?

I give 3 years and then I plan to replace the drive even if it could last 10 years. That is my rule. Raid configurations I will never use, that technology has always been doomed. Mirroring a drive is fairly useless if both drives are going to encounter the same amount of wear.

I’ve never been a big seagate fan, but I have seen them all fail, regardless of brand. At one time Maxtor was considered among the worst, although fujitsu seemed worse than that. But I have had them all fail. I sonsidered WD to be better because it made less noise, but they fail just as much. Truth is, the Maxtor drive in my oldest MAC computer has actually outlasted them all, being 14 years old, and despite the whining bearings, keeps going. It is the bearings in the drive that wear out causing the platter to slowly crash into the fragile glass heads once the gap shortens or widens too much. When the drive sings, in IDE are about to die. Sadly SATA technology does not sing much, just get the dreaded tiny clink to indicate near death.

I feel storage is going to change in a meaningful way. If a drive is Mechanical it WILL fail. When is your only question. SSD’s have no moving parts, however cost has kept them in check for years. Samsung makes a 16 TB SSD. A single SSD drive that would eat my 2 X 6TB and 8TB NAS for breakfast. Speed over the speed of all three mechanical drives combined:
      https://petapixel.com/2015/08/15/samsung-16tb-ssd-is-the-worlds-largest-hard-drive/

That was in 2015, can I buy one? M.2 is also a technology that is advancing, space is not there yet. A few years yes. The world is changing at a breakneck pace. I have personally played games in 4K in Linux with a card that is years old. Resources are plentiful in Linux. I find it funny when I see people run out and buy a Titan X for $1,200 today and my $120 years ago does 4K in Linux, not in Winders. That in itself tells me something.

Bulldozer was a piece of crap? I build entire operating systems in roughly 2 minutes. How? Many may ask. Linux will use as many cores as you throw at it. Can’t wait until the RyZen drops 8 Cores massive gains in IPC 16 threads doing my bidding. Gamers think that it is all about single core performance, blame your programmers in Windows.

Glenn you are THeeMahn !! Love the barebones OS with lots of games. I am not sure if it was my luck but when I did fresh install and rebooted and got to the login screen got error session failed to start but no problem used control ALT F1 and logged in and reinstalled Mate and restarted and it works, Enjoying all of the Ultimate Goodness !

    • TheeMahn

Probably a situation in /etc/skel defaulting to mate. Did not carry through for the user. The hidden file “.dmrc” file in your home folder is what used to determine that. They have probably adjusted that as well. It is almost impossible to keep up with their changes they make as a whole. Glad you got it working. I am sure you will enjoy it. Play WarThunder in your homefolder. BadAss game, it will download 5GB of data.

      • caveman59847

Thanks TheeMahn. So many games, I will try WarThunder !!

I will be putting it on a new system within a month. New system is Core I7 extreme, 8gb ram, Nvidia Geforce 730 3GB ram. Does this meet the minimum requirements for decent gaming?
Probably to add more ram in future since it is 6 memory slot board. Then deep into future maybe dual SLI video cards?

          • TheeMahn

I am holding out for a RyZen 8 Core 16 thread Black Edition. I am already sitting on water cooling 0:36 in, I have the red version. This is what I understand about the RyZen. The better the cooling the faster it runs, uses XFR The chip will easily in those conditions take down anything Intel has to offer. I have no desire to run dual vid cards, just a single Bad boy a Vega preferably or a XFury with HBM also liquid cooled. Depending on how much the Vega drops for. In either condition you will be O.K. I can and have played games in 4K with a junk ATI / AMD 7770 GHZ edition in Linux. Windows a different story. Windows is a resource hogg, no PUN intended.

If you intend to run 4K I would definitely steer clear of on the NVidia 730. To be honest In ether event I would steer clear of NVidia 730, 0 bang for the buck. Get a equivalent or better ATI / AMD for less.

          • kb53

o is AMD 7770? vs Nvidia GTX730. Is there a huge difference in performance compared to both being the same price?

I am buiding my Core I7 extreme edition, using a PEGATRON motherboard (HP Truckee) with 12GB (triple channel memory) with the Nvidia GT 730 card. Here is a question. Since it has SLI 2 PCIX16 slots, can one use Nvidia in 1 slot and AMD in the other. Would they destroy each other? Just kldding. I assume not.
Or can you even run 2 video cards. That would be up to 4 monitors which of course is WAY overkill.
            I assume you cannot.

          • TheeMahn

You can compare card by card here. There are better sites then that, first result. I actually have 2 7770 GHZ cards and have ran them in crossfire in the past. I have learned it is best to get the baddest single video card your money can afford and roll a single card, if necessary in the future double up or weigh options of full replacement of your current card. The CPU upgrade I am looking at. I am a rare exception. I will fully utilize all cores and do so almost daily with my current rig. Gaming a 8 core 16 thread is simply overkill. The Ryzen is a Intel killer from my prespective and I mean all desktop Intel products up and including the 7700 Kaby Lake. Please allow me to explain. With XFR integration in the RyZen & water cooling, unstoppable minus a server level on any level.

Back in the day, a long time ago my Cousin (IronMahn) & I bought an IWill motherboard and a AMD mobile processor & were handing unseen of benches to the net. A mobile processor is unlocked to allow you to slow it down for power savings. The board allowed you to push it the other direction. Over clocking by numbers unseen on the net at that time. One thing of many that is great about Linux in general will utilize your full resources to their full potential.

If you are rocking a I7 Extreme presumption to me would conclude you have money. I would have been looking at $1,200 Titan X or waiting on the Vega to drop. I roll on a 4K monitor and prefer to utilize in those few minutes I have doing 4K gaming. Options become limited, heavy hardware becomes a prerequisite. The strike I take in the premium $1200 now or wait for the Vega with I have seen slides and rumors are claiming a Titan Killer. I am a patient man and will wait when it comes to video. Get this my one monitor can hold the same amount of data pixel for pixel as 4 HD monitors. I have seen extreme video of running 8K at $1,200 a card 4 of them, think about that.

I am O.K with 4K. I at the time paid roughly $500.00 for a 4K monitor refurbished. You can dump some serious money in a computer, in extreme cases more then some pay for a car or in the case of the video a house.
